Fecal matter/matieres fecales are Canadia duo Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran who create some of the most exhilarating and imaginative clothing and images out there. They have done away with 'conventional' fashion and created their own world full of strange beauty.
The clothing itself gives an alternative to acceptable beauty standards by offering products that connect fashion, film, politics and music and ask why we have to dress the way we dress to be accepted by society. They encourage people to look outside the narrow vision of 'normality' in order to help them understand who they are and to help them be who they want to be and more importantly, who you are meant to be.
Their look is sometimes a sublime, ethereal
other-being and sometimes a creature from your nightmares, but however they look it's all about authenticity, this is the way they dress in everyday life which they hope shows to others that you can be who you want to be and dress how you want to dress.
"Bank tellers ask us if we're homeless, or we'll go to the grocery store and the airport and get all this extra negative treatment," Steven says. "But we only view it as a reminder that there's still so much to fight for — we can't rest."
All their hard work seems to be paying off as at the time of writing this they have 738k followers on instagram, and have been named by Vogue as 'an instagram account you should be following.' I know this isn't really a sign of real success, but it shows that they are definitely causing a stir and have themselves become accidental 'influencers'.
Rick Owens has recently had them model his new Converse creations.
Many of their images show the pair on the street, alien apparitions amongst the bemused 'normal folk'
In an interview for Paper Magazine Hannah said "I wish that when I was younger I could've seen somebody doing something different or expressing themselves so I'd have the courage to do it, we don't necessarily want you to look like us, with shaved heads and flowers glued to your scalp. All we want to do is show another perspective, otherwise we'd all be looking the same."
They are making fashion interesting and exciting again against a sea of identikit athleisure gear zombies. They are inspiring a new generation of people to question why the fashion industry is so narrow in its vision and why people are so afraid to be different when it comes to what they wear.
The future's bright.....the future's alien.
