Belgian artistic duo Mothmeister create eerie, fairytale-like, post-apocalyptic horrorscapes.
They have printed two amazingly beautiful books packed full of living nightmares.
Mothmeister shy away from social media because of it's 'shallowness', only using Instagram to showcase their work. Together they create a weird and wonderful universe of 'post-mortem fairy tales'. They present these weird, some might say, ugly masked creatures as a reaction against the exhibitionism of selfie culture and beauty standards marketed by the mass media.
Combining their love of taxidermy with death masks and extreme urban exploration they conjure up other-worldly images that unsettle and at the same time intrigue, what are these fantastical creatures and where do they exist? Somehow, they managed to make their photos menacing and hypnotizing without being threatening. Their images are immediately recognisable, like nothing anyone has created before, from a place never seen before.
The accompanying texts are travel tales that tell of the things they endured to get these images, in desolate, abandoned, God-forsaken places like deepest darkest Russia, Mongolia, the U.S, Argentina and Iceland to name a few. They really do seem to have suffered for their art.
Sometimes, they say, it takes weeks to find a suitable spot and then hours to get there. When they arrive the fairy tale just unravels, they turn up and see what happens. One of them models, that other photographs.
They combine different art disciplines in one single image, collaborating with taxidermists, mask designers, fashion designers, prop artists, etc. These collaborations help make each image truly unique.
